The weight loss pill Ionamin® is an appetite suppressant. The active ingredient within Ionamin is the generic drug phentermine. Phentermine is combined with a resin to create slow release which prolongs the effects of Ionamin.

Ionamin is manufactured by Celltech Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

What does Ionamin® look like?

Ionamin capsules are available in two strengths, 15mg and 30mg.

What is Ionamin prescribed for?

Ionamin is used as a weight loss aid for the heavily overweight. In addition to taking Ionamin patients are expected to adopt a healthy diet and program of regular exercise.

Who should Ionamin be prescribed for?

Ionamin should be prescribed for obese patients with an initial BMI (body mass index) of 30+, or those with a BMI of 27 or above if other risk factors are presence (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia).

Capsules are indicated as a short-term (a few weeks) adjunct in a regimen of weight reduction based on exercise, behavioral modification, and caloric restriction in the management of exogenous

Ionamin is not recommended for:

  • Children of 18 years or younger
  • The elderly

How does Ionamin work?

Ionamin suppresses feelings of hunger by acting on parts of the central nervous system. The active ingredient in Ionamin is the generic drug phentermine.

Ionamin has similar chemical make-up to amphetamine and other stimulant drugs that have a history of abuse. Ionamin is known to be habit forming and should not but used for longer periods that a few week. Nor should Ionamin be taken by anyone other than whom the Doctor prescribed it for.

Is Ionamin a prescription or over the counter drug?

Ionamin is a prescription-only medication.

The chemical composition of Adipex is similar to that of amphetamines and if taken for a prolonged period of time can be addictive. It is usually recommended that Adipex be taken for no longer than a period of a few weeks without a break.

Adipex can also be habit forming and it should only be taken by the patient it was prescribed for.

Ionamin dosages

Your doctor will inform you on the correct dosage for you. Normally patients take one capsule per day approximately 1-2 hours before or after their breakfast. It is not advisable to take Ionamin close to the time when you go to bed as Ionamin is known to increase energy levels and can cause insomnia.

Swallow Ionamin capsules whole and with plenty of water.

What precautions should be taken before using Ionamin?

Inform your Doctor of the following:

  • If your medical history includes high blood pressure, a heart condition, arteriosclerosis, overactive thyroid, diabetes, glaucoma or drug abuse.
  • Any allergies that you may have, especially if you have a known allergy to phentermine.
  • Any medicines you have been taking (both prescription and over-the-counter)
  • If you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant. If you become pregnant whilst using Ionamin inform your doctor immediately.
  • If you are breastfeeding a child.
  • If you are prone to agitated states.

Ionamin with fenfluramine (Phen-Fen)

The active ingredient in Ionamin is the generic medication phentermine. Cases of heart valve abnormalities were recorded amongst numerous patients who were prescribed another drug, fenfluramine, at the same time as phentermine/Ionamin. The FDA issued a public health warning in 1997 against the use of this drug combination known as Phen-Fen.

Over dosage

If a patient over dosages on Ionamin medical help should be sought immediately as serious consequences can arise. In the worse cases this can include death.

More common symptoms of overdosage can include: Unusually high energy levels, tremor, hyperreflexia, increased breathing rate, confusion, assaultiveness, hallucinations, panic, extreme tiredness, depression, arrhythmia, hypertension or hypotension, circulatory collapse, nausea and sickness, diarrhea, abdominal cramps.
